Sharon Wagner, 82, of Danville, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, August 14, 2026. She was born September 1, 1943, in East Aurora, New York, the daughter of the late Cletus and Noel (Scherrer) Nenno.
Fiercely sweet, quiet, loyal, and independent, Sharon was a country girl at heart who found happiness in peace, solitude, and the simple things in life. She was incredibly organized, steadfast in her beliefs, and deeply devoted to her family and the causes that mattered most to her.
Sharon and her husband, Richard “Dick” Wagner, were both from the Buffalo, New York area. As fate would have it, the two met while each was vacationing one weekend in the Allegheny Mountains. They married in 1964 and began their life together in San Francisco. Sharon later made her home in Danville in 1994, where she remained for more than 30 years.
Sharon attended school to become a stenographer, a talent that became a source of amusement in the Wagner household. Her children knew that somewhere among her cryptic shorthand notes were the secrets to their Christmas presents—they simply could never figure out what the notes said. Sharon later worked as a medical transporter for more than 20 years, a career that reflected her dependable and caring nature.
Sharon had a generous heart and was dedicated to the causes she supported. She was involved with the National Association for Down Syndrome and faithfully participated in the Buddy Walk each year. She also supported the Hendricks County Humane Society and enjoyed being part of the local senior center. Once Sharon committed herself to something, she gave it her wholehearted support.
An avid reader, Sharon especially enjoyed Harlequin romance novels and autobiographies. She could often be found working a crossword puzzle or knitting blankets, hats, scarves, and gloves. Music filled her life as well, particularly the songs of the 1950s and 1960s, with Elvis Presley among her favorites.
Some of Sharon’s happiest memories were made enjoying the water while boating at the Lake of the Ozarks and during visits to Niagara Falls. But wherever she went and whatever she was doing, family remained at the heart of her life.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Richard “Dick” Wagner; her son, Keith Wagner; her daughter, Denise Neuman; and her sister, Yvonne Fish.
She is survived by her daughter, Andrea (Gary) Jakresky; grandchildren, Skylar (Ethan) Brown, Noah Jakresky, Victoria Neuman, Alexandra (Landon) Stipe, and Peyton Neuman; and great-grandson, Kane Neuman.
Sharon will be remembered for her quiet strength, fierce independence, tender heart, and unwavering loyalty. She lived life on her own terms, cared deeply for the people and causes she loved, and found joy in family, music, books, and peaceful moments. Her steadfast presence and sweet spirit will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 1:00 pm until the service at 3:00 pm at Helton & Harris Funeral Home, 102 S. Indiana St., Danville, IN 46122.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Sharon’s name to the Hendricks County Humane Society.
