Richard “Dick” Armstrong, 87, of Plainfield, IN passed away, surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 8, 2025. He was born July 25, 1937; a son of the late Orville and Valvatta (Krause) Armstrong. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Robert "Bugs" Armstrong and grandchildren Misty Lynn Armstrong, Richard Michael Armstrong and Donald Lee Armstrong.
He graduated from Clayton High School with the class of 1955. Afterwards, he attended trade school to become a Tool and Die Maker, working for Ford Motor Company, retiring after 38 1/2 years of service. He married his grade school sweetheart on June 10, 1956, celebrating 68 years of marriage.
Dick had many hobbies; especially talented with his hands, he could play the guitar, craft jewelry and fix almost anything you left on his garage desk, “for fixing”.
He was a real marksman, even organizing the “Quick Draw” Gun Club at the Ford Motor Company Plant in Indianapolis. He and his daughter, Sheryl, started taking Judo when she was 9 and he was 29. He followed through with anything he put his mind to and quickly received his black belt in Judo, going on to teach for many years. Dick was a Benefactor Member of the NRA, and member of the First Baptist Church of Clayton.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Lula (Elmore) Armstrong; two children, Sheryl Lynn Bass of Greenfield IN, Michael Lee Armstrong of Clayton, IN; grandchildren Molly & Jessica Armstrong, Jennifer Gattung and Steven Bass; Also missing Dick are numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Monday, June 16, 2025. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 11:00 am with calling at 10:00 am at Helton & Harris Funeral Home, 4712 Pennsylvania St., Clayton, IN. He will be laid to rest in Clayton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be offered to the First Baptist Church of Clayton or the NRA.
