Jean English

September 16, 1940 — March 27, 2026

Jean A. English, 85, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on the evening of Friday, March 27, 2026. Her beloved husband of 64 years, Marvin Eugene English, preceded her in death on December 12, 2023. Together, they shared a lifetime built on devotion to one another, their family, and the simple joys of home.

Jean was the daughter of the late Leland and Esther (Allen) Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her brothers, Winson (Donna) Smith and Frank (Sandy) Smith; and Marvin’s parents, Willard and Mabel (Mabe) English, as well as his brother, Leon English.

Jean graduated from Brownsburg High School with the Class of 1958 and later earned her associate’s degree in business accounting from Indiana Business College. She worked for 20 years as an office manager for Lykes Brothers in Florida. Marvin was born on May 7, 1940, in Hendricks County, Indiana, where he grew up working on the family farm. Eventually, with Jean working alongside him, they built their own family farming operation. Marvin later became an over-the-road truck driver before owning and operating Quality Trucking Co. in Florida for many years prior to his retirement.

After many RV trips spent fishing and enjoying time together in the mid-1980s, Jean and Marvin made Lake Placid, Florida their home, where they lived for nearly 40 years. Though Marvin spent years on the road driving, both he and Jean were true homebodies who found their greatest happiness together at home and with family.

Jean was a devoted homemaker, an excellent cook, and loved to entertain. Family was always her priority, and she remained especially close to her siblings and loved ones throughout her life. She was fiercely independent, had a wonderful sense of humor, and possessed a sassy spirit. Marvin was an avid fisherman who deeply loved his family and treasured the life he and Jean built together.

Together, they are survived by their daughter, Juli Harding (Ron) of Solsberry, Indiana; their grandchildren, Rachel Hable (Austin) and Ayron Gladson, and two great grandsons, Kaden and Ryder Gladson; and Jean’s sister, Patty Willis (Donnie). Jean’s family would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to the amazing caregivers who supported, loved, and cared for her.

A Celebration of these two beautiful lives will be held Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 12:00 PM, with one hour of visitation prior at Helton & Harris Funeral Home, 4712 Pennsylvania St., Clayton, Indiana 46118. They will be laid to rest together at Amo Cemetery in Amo, Indiana.
