Gayle (Billet) Morton

Gayle Lavonne (Billet) Morton, of Danville, Indiana, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 11, 2026, one day after celebrating her 83rd birthday.

Born on July 10, 1943, in Austin, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Victor (Vic) and Wilma Billet.  Gayle was raised in Leetonia, Ohio. She earned her bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University before pursuing a master's degree in education from Butler University, preparing for the career that became her life's passion.

On October 7, 1967, she married the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Morton, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 59 wonderful years.

Gayle began her teaching career in Berea, Ohio, where she taught elementary school for several years before moving to Indiana. She then spent the next 30 years inspiring students at McClelland Elementary School in Wayne Township, Indianapolis. She especially enjoyed teaching upper elementary students, delighting in the fact that they were finally old enough to appreciate—and laugh at—her jokes. Her love for teaching and the countless young lives she influenced remained one of her greatest joys.

Outside the classroom, Gayle embraced life with enthusiasm and a wonderful sense of humor. She was an avid reader, an enthusiastic gardener, and a passionate golfer. She treasured her annual adventures with her beloved Bridge Group, traveling to destinations near and far with cherished lifelong friends. She also enjoyed countless rounds of golf with her brother, sister, sisters-in-law, and especially with her husband. Winter trips to Florida often found her on the golf course, where she happily discovered she wasn't nearly the "duffer" she claimed to be—especially when she managed to outplay Dick, something she thoroughly enjoyed.

Nothing brought Gayle greater happiness than her family. She rarely missed the opportunity to attend her daughter's school activities and later delighted in cheering on her grandchildren at their school events and sporting competitions. She was their biggest fan and treasured every moment spent with them.

Gayle will be remembered for her quick wit, warm heart, love of learning, adventurous spirit, and unwavering devotion to her family, friends, students, and all whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Richard Morton; her daughter, Jennifer Morton Hill, and son-in-law, Scott Hill; and her beloved grandchildren, Presley and Justus; sister, Patty (Tate) Burkhart, brother, Bill (Joanie) Billet and nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many dear friends, former students, and extended family members who will forever cherish her memory.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM on Friday, July 17, 2026 at the Helton & Harris Funeral Home, 102 S. Indiana St., Danville, IN 46122. A service will be held the following day at 11:00 am with a one hour visitation prior.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gayle's name to the Hendricks County Senior Center, 1201 Sycamore Lane, Danville, IN 46122.
