Gail Tharp

March 7, 1942 — May 25, 2025

Danville

Gail Maureen (O’Brien) Tharp entered this world on March 7, 1942, in Binghamton, New York, the beloved daughter of Francis and Barbara (Pope) O’Brien. Growing up amidst the peaceful landscapes of rural New York, Gail shared a treasured childhood with her siblings—Sharon, Jack, Jim, Nancy, and Bill—filled with laughter, love, and enduring bonds. She graduated from Windsor High School in 1959, stepping confidently into the next chapter of her life.

In 1961, Gail’s family journeyed west to Greencastle, Indiana, where new opportunities blossomed. It was during her tenure at IBM that fate brought her together with her future husband, Donald Tharp. On August 10, 1963, their hearts united in marriage, and two years later, they welcomed their precious daughter, Maureen Rae Tharp.

Settling in Danville, Indiana, Gail quickly became a vibrant force in her community. She nurtured young minds as Director of the child care program at Northview Christian Church and later managed the Salt Shaker Christian Bookstore. Her spirit of service extended beyond these roles—she was a devoted Girl Scout Leader, a cherished member of Beta Tri Kappa, and a passionate steward of knowledge, serving on the Danville-Center Township Library board during its transformative third expansion.

Gail’s dedication to preserving local heritage shone through her many years volunteering at the Hendricks County Museum, where she also served on the board of directors. An artist at heart, she found joy in painting and writing, authoring beloved children’s stories and historical books that touched many lives.

A lover of adventure, Gail’s travels led her to explore new horizons and embrace the beauty of the world. Yet, above all, her greatest joy was her family—the light of her life. As a devoted mother to Maureen, a proud grandmother to Seth and Sarah, and a loving great-grandmother to Braylee and Harper, Gail’s warmth and kindness will forever echo in their hearts.

Gail Maureen O’Brien Tharp is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Maureen (Steve) Elliott; her grandchildren, Seth (Jessica) Elliott and Sarah (Aaron) Swick; and her precious great-grandchildren, Braylee Rae and Harper Jane.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Rhea Tharp; her cherished parents, Francis and Barbara O’Brien; her sisters, Nancy and Sharon; and her brothers, Jack, Jim, and Gene William “Bill” O’Brien.
