Arthur Eugene “Gene” Wiggam, Jr. passed away with his family by his side on Friday, January 23, 2026. He was born on July 10, 1947, the son of the late Arthur and Dean (Elliott) Wiggam. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Wiggam; his sister, Anita Hollars; and his grandson, Trey Long.
Gene graduated from Danville High School with the Class of 1965. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana State University and went on to teach history and economics at Avon High School. During his career in education, he coached junior high and freshman football and track, served as assistant varsity basketball coach, and was the head track coach. He later worked for IMI Concrete for many years. Gene enjoyed fishing and quail hunting.
Gene is survived by his wife of 18 years, Jan Wiggam; his daughters, Kim Wiggam Beard of Avon, IN, Deanna (Brad) Long of Plainfield, IN, and Stephanie (Chad) Medcalfe of Wilmington, NC; and his stepchildren, Doug Wright of North Salem and Michelle (Dave) Mercik of Coral Springs, FL. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Tyler (Hannah) Long, Trevor (Courtney) Long, Lindee Long, Calvin (Katie) Medcalfe, Gracie Medcalfe, Libby (Grant) Cecil, Sophie Beard, Hadley Beard, and Cody Wright; and his great-grandchildren, Evelynn and Elliott Long. Gene is further survived by his brother, Audrey (Nancy) Wiggam of Austin, TX; his sisters, Joan Harman of Sun City Center, FL, and Rachelle (Bo) Humphrey of Danville, IN; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at Camby Community Church, 8604 Camby Road, Camby, IN 46113, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. Gene will be laid to rest in Mill Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gathering Together Hospice Care at https://thegatheringtogether.org/donate/.
